DORCHESTER 46

CORSHAM 22

DORCHESTER’S domination of the set scrum put them on a path to victory during a 46-22 success over Corsham in Counties One Tribute Southern South.

The club were commemorating one of its former presidents, who was also a captain, player and legendary tourist, Harry Brewer.

To mark the occasion, prior to kick-off, a minute’s applause took place to celebrate his enthusiasm for the club and the contribution he made to it over a great number of years.

Once the game commenced, Alex Peel in his new role of full-back, scored Dorchester’s opening try with only five minutes played.

The visitors responded when their quick and elusive right winger outpaced the cover to cross in the corner. The successful conversion gave Corsham the lead for the only time in the game.

Skipper Steve Tucker strolled over from the base of an advancing scrum soon after, followed by winger Matt Fry skipping down the left wing for his fourth try since his return to the first team.

Jack Hayward added the bonus-point try but Corsham, who always looked dangerous with ball in hand, scored a second try as the half drew to a close.

As the second half resumed, Hayward secured his own brace, converted by Cohen Emery, stretching the lead to a comfortable 17 points.

With the game seemingly safe Dorchester were able to give debuts to two 17-year-old colts, Flynn Drummond, and Josh White. Drummond made his mark with his first touch, beating three defenders before scoring in the left corner.

The visitors did cross for a third try before Drummond again showed some elusive running to score in the left corner. White showed well with his role in the forwards making some big tackles and showing no fear of the visitors’ pack.

Corsham scored a deserved fourth bonus-point try before Fry finished off the scoring with his second of the match.

At times there was some niggle in the game, with Corsham getting a yellow after only five minutes into the match and over the course of the match both sides picked up visits to the ‘sin bin’.

Man of the match for Dorchester was popular prop, Joe Underhill, for his front-row performance in a dominant pack.

After the match the county town’s coaching team were pleased with the overall result having targeted a win, but there are still some improvements to be made to show well against the top four in the Counties One Tribute Southern South table, all of whom the side have to play in the coming weeks.

Sitting seventh in the table, Dorchester next travel to Weymouth & Portland for the second Ridgeway Rumble of the season, the Seahorses sitting in 10th.

With only two home fixtures left at Surcouf Park, the squad will need to travel well and dig deep to come home with points to consolidate their final standing in the league table.

Elsewhere, Dorchester’s A XV won on the road at Oakmeadians 41-7 in an impressive showing, which again featured some of the club’s colts stepping up to senior rugby and performing well.
