JASON Matthews hailed Weymouth’s 1-1 draw at Bath City as an “unbelievable reaction” to Bobby Wilkinson’s exit in midweek.

Matthews, named interim boss in Wilkinson’s absence, was up against it at play-off chasing Bath, especially after Joe Rayner prodded the Romans in front on 22 minutes.

But the Terras held on and grew into the game, dominating the second half and deservedly levelling through Ezio Touray’s precise 79th-minute volley from an acute angle.

And, but for a horror miss by Joel Rollinson, the Terras could have snatched all three points at the death.

Speaking post-match, Matthews said: “A great performance, it’s all about the lads. Credit to the lads, they were fantastic and an unbelievable reaction (to Wilkinson’s exit).

“It’s sad that Bob has gone, the boys have picked up, had a week off from Saturday where we were carrying a few knocks.

“That showed with Brandon (Goodship) and Teddy (Howe) coming off early. It’s a great point and the last 20 minutes we were by far the stronger team.

“Ezio came on and does the business again.”

Matthews did take issue with Weymouth’s defending for Raynes’ finish, adding: “I’m really annoyed with the goal. I think it could’ve been avoided at two or three different points.

“Credit to the lads with the way they’ve reacted. They’ve probably kept the ball a little bit better. That’s something the new man can work on.”

Weymouth move on to an Easter Monday derby at home to title favourites Yeovil Town (1pm).

Matthews is expected to be in the dugout with assistant Josh McQuoid.

Quizzed on whether he would take charge against the Glovers, Matthews told Echosport: “I wouldn’t imagine an appointment will be made.

“I’m sure they’ll be looking around, there’s all kinds of speculation. Paul (Maitland), the chairman, who I’ve been liaising with has just told me to do the job for Monday and we’ll speak in the week.

“For me, I’ve no intention of being the manager. I don’t think my body and heart can take it!

“I was more than happy for Bob to be the front man. I’ve had 90 minutes of the spotlight and it’s not really for me.

“I can’t give you the answer but I’d envisage I’m in charge on Monday and I’ll be giving it my best shot.”
