JASON Matthews extended his well wishes after a Yeovil fan was taken ill during the derby with Weymouth, eventually leading to the game’s abandonment.

Dan Roberts had fired Weymouth into a 32nd-minute lead as Weymouth subdued the league leaders.

Yeovil improved in the second half but, with 13 minutes remaining, the game was then halted and later called off following a 42-minute pause.

It transpired a medical emergency had occurred in the Yeovil end and the person affected required treatment from medics, who landed on the pitch in an air ambulance.

And, while interim boss Matthews labelled Weymouth as “outstanding”, his thoughts were firmly with the casualty.

Post-match, he told the gathered media: “Unbelievable, we were outstanding first half, really put Yeovil on the back foot and pressed really well.

“A few standout performances, Robbo was superb and fully deserved his goal. What a strike in a derby.

“My thoughts are to the lady that’s seriously ill. The circumstances were taken out of our hands. We wish her well.

“In the two games in my stand-in period they were outstanding for me. We played some good stuff at times in a local derby. I was really pleased with the lads.

“It’s gutting the game wasn’t seen out. Yeovil did grow into the game but they were always going to come at us, there was so much at stake.

“What a spectacle for Weymouth Football Club, they’ve put on a great show.”

Matthews also reserved praise for the performances of Weymouth centre-backs Corey Panter and Jordon Thompson, who ably dealt with Yeovil’s considerable talent up front.

“Everyone to a man was superb,” he added.

“Corey and Jordon have done well, Yeovil had an injury and bring on a really experienced player in Rhys Murphy at this level.

“They nullified Yeovil and Yeovil were reliant on their diagonal ball, but we've done so well. We looked to get it down in that final third, which for me is really pleasing.

“And Robbo took his goal so well.

“Second half, we did come under a little bit of pressure and it was starting to build.

“Other than the one-on-one, Harv (Wiles-Richards, goalkeeper) has not really had too much to do.”

On Roberts’ goal, Matthews added: “I’m just pleased.

“It was a really good press in the middle of the park and Robbo’s let it come across him on his left and shot in the bottom corner. You can’t ask for any more.

“Going late into the first half, we’ve had good delivery in the box, had a good header from Charlie Rowan.

“For a team who are league leaders, we’ve limited them. That’s massive credit to the boys.”

Matthews will now return to his goalkeeping coach duties after Mark Molesley was appointed manager, replacing Bobby Wilkinson.
