WEYMOUTH manager Mark Molesley believes there are “green shoots” of improvement in the Terras’ play after the 0-0 draw at Welling United.

Weymouth saw three presentable chances go before Antony Papadopoulos hit the bar for the hosts.

Dan Roberts and Tom Bearwish were denied by fabulous saves from Reice Charles-Cook and Frankie Monk blazed over late on as Welling secured the point they needed for safety in Step 2.

However, as Weymouth continue to adapt to Molesley’s methods and intended style of play, the ex-Southend boss is enthused by his squad’s efforts so far.

Addressing Weymouth’s defensive solidity and the clean sheet, he told Echosport: “If you take away a slow start at Maidstone I think we’ve been pretty solid.

“Loads of positives, lots of green shoots. We’re learning about each other more and more and at the moment I’m frustrated that I can’t have more time with these lads at the moment.

“Unfortunately, the fixture list and stage of the season doesn’t allow that.

“I’m literally a fan at the moment. I’m watching the boys and supporting them. I’m cheering for them. They gave me a lot to cheer about.”

He added: “The lads were superb, a third long travel and Welling are a tough cookie at home. It was always going to be difficult.

“We controlled long spells of possession, created lots of chances and were resolute.

“What I was really pleased with was the way we progressed the ball, I really enjoyed watching us play on a really difficult pitch.

“All that was missing was that last cutting edge but we did go agonisingly close. I’m really pleased with such a short spell together, to see the team grow is full credit to the lads.”

Weymouth travel to Gloucester, the temporary home of Truro City, for their penultimate league game on Thursday evening (7.45pm).
