DORCHESTER Casuals have completed the league and cup double in their first season back in the Dorchester & District Evening League.

Following Casuals’ comfortable victory over St George’s in the Doug Read Cup final, they defeated Charlton Down by 21 runs to give them an unchallengeable lead in the league table.

Simon Mitchem and Nick Joslin gave Casuals an excellent start to their 123 chase and Billy Baker’s 4-5 made sure despite Ashley Hayes’ 71 not out for Charlton Down.

Down have had a busy time with a win against Martinstown plus defeats to St George’s and Cattistock & Symene.

Hayes was top scorer again with 40 not out in the demolition of Martinstown by nine wickets but against St George’s it was Sam Roles with 93 who posted Charlton’s best batting score, though a lack of much support as Matt King (3-21) allowed Matt Randell (51no) to lead Saints to a 16-run win.

Roles also scored 40 in pursuit of Cattistock’s 161 which was built on 50 not out from Steven Tucker but Ollie Legg’s 4-22 and Archie Mullins with 3-16 meant a Foxes victory by 34 runs.

Elsewhere, a magnificent 97-run partnership between Adam Barrett (67) and Michael Crabb (69) gave Puddletown a 43-run margin against St George’s.

The performance of the week came from Crispin Brown of Dewlish who scored 91 not out at a rate of almost two runs per ball and then took 4-13 in Puddletown Seconds’ reply. Unfortunately for him, a good all-round team performance gave Puddletown victory by three wickets.

Puddletown also pulled off a comprehensive victory against Plush, while Dewlish were involved in two games in quick succession against Abbotsbury.

At Dewlish, a remarkable 20 wickets fell in the game as Henry Cox with 5-15 kept the Swans 20 runs short despite Kynan Brian’s 46.

Things were closer in the return as Joshua Booth led Dewlish to post 101, after which Simon Pittman’s unbeaten 34 left his side agonisingly just two runs adrift.

New Look/ASM took a giant step towards the Division Three title with victory over Charlton Down Seconds by nine wickets.

Charlton’s openers Roger Frapwell (69) and Phil Holdworth (39) set their side up for a massive score but when Phil retired out and Roger was dismissed, the target of 152 proved accessible to New Look for whom Paul Chatterton’s 65 not out was key.

Puddletown Thirds easily beat Plush by 114 runs, chief contributors being Kevin Whitfield with 65 not out and John Ashfield with 3-6.

There was much tension at Plush as Dorchester Colts squeezed to a six-wicket win against Puddletown RFC, the winning runs coming from the last available ball.
